Not suprisingly, the skin is the largest organ of the body. Its main function is PROTECTION. It protects the body from such factors as bacteria, heat, cold, and chemicals. In addition it protects the muscles, bones, and organs of the body from the harsh realities of the outside world.
People under the age of 5 and older than the age of 50 have a tendency to be more sensitive to the harmful effects of Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation. In addition, those with chronic diseases and immune deficiencies will also be more prone to the negative side-effects of UV exposure.
Generally, people with medium to dark complexions are less sensitive to the dangers of UV exposure. Although people with darker complexions are less likely to get skin cancer than people with lighter complexions, they can still develop malignancies and suffer all forms of UV damage.
Be very careful about your UV exposure if you take certain oral and topical medicines, such as antibiotics, birth control pills, and benzoyl peroxide products, as well as some cosmetics. These factors may increase skin and eye sensitivity to UV in all skin types. |
